beardbbcAlex is an expedition leader, photographer, athlete and zoologist. Only 23 years old, he has spent a total of over eighteen weeks unsupported in the Arctic.

Biography

He recently led the Tiso Trans Greenland Expedition which, at 1374 miles, is the longest fully unsupported polar expedition in history. Alex grew up in Hampshire, was educated in Dorset and read Biology at the University of Oxford.

In 2002, aged 15, Alex was one of the youngest people to complete the 125-mile Devizes to Westminster kayak ultra-marathon. During 2003 and 2004, he was twice a finalist in the international BBC Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and in the same year won the coveted Lord Kitchener’s Scholarship award. 2005 brought the Oxford-Cambridge Varsity Triathlon and two months living with and photographing Grey Wolves in the USA. In 2006 Alex won his rowing ‘blade’ at University of Oxford and completed the Flora London Marathon in 3hrs 19 mins. He also reached the summit of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. In 2007 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, the home of British exploration and led a Greenland climbing and man hauling expedition. After first passing selection at 16 years old, Alex joined the 2008 Royal Marines Young Officer Batch.

Alex’s first book, The Long Haul, is to be released in March 2010.

Alex also spends as much time as possible mountaineering, skiing, white-water kayaking and drinking good beer.
